Command & Control (C2)

Command and Control (C2) is a part of both portable and body-worn FR systems by Seventh Sense AI, that are used for security, surveillance and defense. The C2 receives recognition alerts and maintains communication with personnel and cameras in the field.

Overview

The Command and Control system is one of the components of the FR systems by Seventh Sense AI that lead the team to working with one of Singapore’s government body. Any faces recognised, or unrecognised, depending on the system settings of the FR system, will send an alert to the Command and Control screen, as well as the smart glasses screen. Note: The Command and Control is not solely for state-owned enterprise use, but is a product that can be used as a security and surveillance tool for private companies too. But for this portfolio, I will focus on defence and surveillance use cases.

Project role and team members

Role: Sole interaction and UI Designer for the entire system

Other team members: Two third-party companies with different project leads, hardware engineer, firmware engineer, frontend developer, QA consultant and backend developers

Tools used: Adobe XD, Sketch, InVision, Slack, GitLab, Zoom

The process

Initial planning, identifying users and user stories

As part of my research, I’ve done a competitive analysis about security and surveillance softwares from different competitors that are in the market. As direct user interviews weren’t possible, and finding people who works in the field are not available to answer questions regarding these systems, we can only rely on the basic requirements and user stories given to us by top management stakeholders as part of the system’s specifications. I also used available unclassified materials online that were published by Singapore Police Force and other Singapore government agencies regarding security and surveillance systems and these are the materials I’ve used to plan. I had to take every opportunity during meetings to ask questions regarding users, current flow, and the requirements given.

Problem statement

Based on research, most of the components of the other systems aren’t necessary for what is needed by the client. These systems have so many tools, fields and sections the client wouldn’t use. They want a system that would show alerts immediately, clearly show locations and all important information about the person of interest.

How do we build a Command and Control system that would help personnel find the important information easily, including coordinates of a moving target, and show alerts that would be seen immediately?

User flows, wireframes and mock-up screens

After defining user stories for each module, we have defined the flow and identified the screens for each module.

Collaborating with developers, testing and iterations

Created a prototype for the client to test, and worked with the client point-of-contact to made all necessary changes to the design. After all mock-ups were done for all modules of C2, I collaborated with the third-party developers to create all the screens, and worked with the internal QA consultant to test both the interface, flow and backend of the system. The system had gone a couple more iterations before it has been released.
